Art Adventures at Riverside Off Center

The Riverside Art Center has a new adventure in store for children. This April, in partnership with the Eastern Michigan University Visual Arts Education Program, Riverside launches “Art Adventures at Riverside Off Center,” after school and Saturday art enrichment classes for grade K-5 students. Special thanks go to the Ypsilanti Area Community Fund, an affiliate fund of the Ann Arbor Area Community Foundation, for a grant providing art material for these classes.

Riverside’s “Art Adventures at Riverside Off Center” classes provide a valuable resource for the Ypsilanti community, expanding opportunities for educational enrichment and enjoyable art experiences for children. Students will explore a variety of visual arts media and have fun in a safe, active learning environment. EMU’s Visual Arts Education Program will provide hands-on instruction with experienced art specialists. Participation builds confidence, self-esteem, skills, and knowledge.

Two three-week sessions are available, and classes meet once a week for 90 minutes. Session 1 runs April 2-19, and Session 2 runs April 23-May 10, 2008. Lessons will be different in each session. Classes for grades K-1 meet Saturdays from 10:00 to 11:30 AM; grades 2-3 meet Saturdays from 12:00 to 1:30 PM; and grades 4-5 will meet Wednesdays from 4:30 to 6:00 PM. These kickoff sessions have been developed around the theme of community, showcasing the beauty and vibrancy found in Ypsilanti life. Students will draw, paint, create assemblage sculptures, tour the Riverside’s Art Gallery, and make great memories. No prior experience is necessary.

Class Location
Classes will take place in the Riverside Off Center (former Detroit Edison Building), 64 N. Huron St., Ypsilanti. Parking is available in the lot just north of the Riverside Arts Center at 76 N. Huron St.

Class Attire
Many of the materials used in class are permanent and cannot be washed out. Students are advised to dress for mess, so it’s a good idea to wear old clothing.

Limited Enrollment
Class space is limited. Registration is on a first come, first served basis. Please register early to ensure that the class you want will run. Classes that do not meet minimum enrollment may be cancelled.

Registration
Class fees are $33 per session per student, which includes all materials. Pre-registration is required. Fees are due in full upon registration. For questions or to register by phone, please call Riverside at (734) 480-2787 or the EMU Dept. of Art at (734) 487-1268.

Cancellations
Fees are not refundable unless Riverside cancels a class. If a class is cancelled, you will receive a refund by mail.

Say Cheese!
Photographers will be on hand to take images of classroom activities for possible publication and grant reporting purposes. If you prefer not to have pictures taken of your child, please notify the class instructor.
