Work! An Artist’s Impression opens August 2
An exciting new exhibit at the Riverside Gallery shows the far-reaching impact of Eastern Michigan University Professor and printmaker RichardFaifield as both artist and mentor. “Work! An Artist’s Impression” features prints by Fairfield alongside works by his former Master of Fine Arts graduate students at EMU.

As a professor of art at EMU since 1963, Fairfield has been a mentor to many students during his distinguished career. Ben Bigelow and Tim Gralewski, recent MFA printmaking graduates from EMU, have organized a diverse show to demonstrate Fairfield’s influence as an artist and teacher. Fairfield turns seventy this year, so the exhibit will also celebrate his birthday.

Exhibit organizer Gralewski stated, “I think everyone in life has had a teacher who has inspired them and affected their life in some way. We thought it would be great idea for an exhibit, to not only pay tribute to that person in our life, but also to show how that influence stretches beyond the confines of a classroom.”

Bigelow and Gralewski invited former students from Michigan and across the United States to participate in the show, and as a testament to Fairfield, not a single artist declined. “The response was incredible,” Gralewski notes. The result is a wide range of artwork as well. “It’s really interesting to see how everyone’s art had progressed into different directions and to see what they’ve taken from the same shared experience,” says Gralewski.

An opening reception for the artist will be held on Saturday, August 4, from 5 to 7 .m. Gallery hours are Thursday-Saturday, 3-9 pm; and Sunday, 1:30-4 p.m. The show runs through September 2, 2007.

Landscape/Bodyscape show opens September 6
September’s show at the gallery, Landscape/Bodyscape: Dee Overly and Dan Trimbath, demonstrates two different approaches to landscape and figurative subjects. Overly enjoys focusing on specific facets of nature and magnifying them in her colored pencil drawings, creating works that draw the viewer in to further examine details. Trimbath’s oil paintings encourage viewers to stand back to take in the sweep of his landscapes. They take equally personal approaches to portraying the human figure.

Overly has a degree in Architecture Design, and exhibits her award-winning work regularly in juried and non-juried shows. She is a member of the Ann Arbor Women Artists, the Colored Pencil Society of America, and the Detroit Colored Pencil Chapter 104. Trimbath studied painting with Lois Griffel of the Cape Cod School of Art, developing a keen interest in the relationship between light and color. He is currently pursuing a Master of Arts degree at Eastern Michigan University. Overly and Trimbath met at a life drawing class at EMU and have been friends ever since.

Please join us for an opening reception with the artists on Saturday, September 8, from 5-7 p.m. The exhibit continues through September 29, 2007.
