There’s progress for the ARTS in Ypsi

• DTE's first performance
In another first for the RAC, the Southeast Michigan New Year Jubilee returned with Gemini, Choral Connection, and mime Michael Lee in the usual RAC stage locations and storyteller LaRon Williams appearing as the first performance in the renovated DTE annex. Other rooms and floors of the annex are not yet available for use until the elevator project is completed, but party-goers say they look forward to events all through the facility at next year's huge family celebration.

• Elevator stuck for now
The connector addition between RAC and DTE is seeking additional sources of funding to augment that which has already been allocated. The site presents unique problems for the contractors. An estimate for removing the "rifle range" under the alleyway pointed out some unusual characteristics. "We have to break up the concrete from the street side, then haul it out with the front-loader in reverse," said one contractor, "and there’s no room to turn or maneuver to get the rubble out to the truck on the street."

• Volunteers pitch in
A team of workers turned out on a Saturday in December to tidy up the plaza on the building's north side. Still more helpers have been prepping and painting inside the Annex’s first floor exhibition room.

Downtown renovation in full swing at DTE annex

The elegant Art Deco-style Edison building just south of the Riverside Arts Center is coming back into use. It is the site of the first pioneer settlement in Washtenaw County, and has a marker on the front facade commemorating Godfroy’s Trading Post at that location.

For the past year, local art supporters have turned out to renovate these spaces as they expand the activities at the Arts Center.

Volunteers are always welcome to help with the process.

Leave a telephone message at the RAC (480-2787) to coordinate your painting and cleaning talents for the good of the arts in Ypsi. You don’t have to be an expert; good intentions are acceptable too.

Citizens Bank Corp supports the RAC:

“Based on our knowledge of the work that you do in our local communty, your organization was nominated by our staff for a local grant. After reviewing the many charitable organizations submitted, we’ve selected your organization for an unrestricted grant of $750. Our community needs the strong foundation that organizations such as the Riverside Arts Center provide. Keep up the good work.”
