Element: Water
Solo exhibition of photographs by Samuel Ritter opens November 1

The Harbor View
Union Fountain

Samuel Ritter’s collection of new work focuses on the single classical element of water, exploring the calming and reflective qualities of his chosen subject. The show is the first in a proposed series focusing on the classical elements of water, air, fire, and earth.

Ritter’s interest in photography dates back to his childhood and has grown into a passion. Although Ritter was trained in traditional film-based photographic processes, the images in the exhibit were all produced digitally. Ritter notes, “The digital photography revolution was somewhat of a struggle for me. It’s not been a struggle with technique but a mental struggle as there are some qualities of film that cannot be duplicated digitally. Conversely, there are also aspects of digital photography that take the art to new levels.” Ritter feels that digital photography has stretched and improved his skills as an artist.

The works in this show explore the interplay of light, abstraction, and beauty. Ritter also plays with the element of scale, creating photographs up to 40” x 60” in size for an immersive effect.

Opening reception with the artist on Saturday, November 3, from 5 to 7 pm in the gallery. As a special offer visitors will received a 10% discount on any purchases made during the opening reception.

The show runs through December 1, 2007. Gallery hours are Thursday-Saturday, 3-9 pm; and Sunday, 1:30-4 pm. Please note that the gallery will be closed November 22-25 for the Thanksgiving holiday.

Dynamic Organics opens 2008 Gallery Season

Dianne Austin: "On a Walk with Carol"

Welcome the New Year with an exciting new show in the Riverside Gallery. Dynamic Organics, an exhibition of mixed-media works by Dianne Austin and photographs by Leslie Ford opens January 10, 2008. Nature provides the inspiration for these two artists whose imaginations are captivated by the potential found in seeds, pods, and sprouting onions and potatoes.

Leslie Ford’s color photographs of sprouting potatoes and onions depict vigorous new shoots emerging from the shriveled bodies of the vegetables. For the artist, these images embody “the notion that matter is in ceaseless flux, endlessly degrading and reshaping.”

Ford creates still life-like settings for the sprouting forms, placing them in antique wooden boxes or glass containers to provide a sense of structure that contrasts with the organic shapes.

Dianne Austin uses a variety of media to create three-dimensional forms inspired by the natural world around her. She relates that, “The energy and transformational possibility found in a seedpod is astounding.” Whether seedpods or leaves, Austin’s larger-than-life creations are not always purely literal interpretations but often incorporate a personal emotion or message.

An opening reception for the artists will be held on Saturday, January 12, from 5 to 7 p.m. in the gallery. The exhibit will run through February 2, 2008. Gallery hours are Thursday-Saturday, 3-9 pm; and Sunday, 1:30-4 p.m.
