You Can Dance

February 13 @ 10:30 am

Ali Chahrour’s Layl (Night)

Ali Chahrour, a Lebanese choreographer and theater maker, draws inspiration from Arabic stories, legends, and poems relating to love. No dance training or experience is necessary, and all levels are welcome. Recommended for ages 13 and up. Free, but advanced registration is strongly encouraged.

Born in Beirut in 1989, Ali Chahrour studied theatre and dance in his native city and various schools in Europe. Far from western models, the dancer and choreographer has created a language inspired by Arab myths and by the political, social, and religious context of his country. Through it, he explores the deep relationships between the body and movement, between tradition and modernity. Back when my mother told stories is the second part of a new trilogy about love, which began with Layl-Night in 2019.

Riverside and UMS partner for a community dance series called “You Can Dance.” A 75 minute exploration of each company’s signature style.

No dance training or experience is necessary, and all levels are welcome. Recommended for ages 13 and up. Free, but advanced registration is strongly encouraged.
