Call for Art: Anything But… Canvas – A Mixed Media Exhibition

Overview:
Canvas has been a widely utilized medium in the Western art canon, Riverside Arts Center is excited to explore the possibilities beyond this medium. We invite artists to submit works that transcend canvas as a medium and delve into realms of mixed media. This exhibition aims to celebrate the boundless possibilities and innovative approaches that arise when artists venture outside the familiar confines of a canvas including 2D and 3D works.

This is the first of the exhibition series titled “Anything But…”. The series aims to challenge artists to step away from traditional and relied upon uses of art materials. We want artists to experiment and play with new mediums and techniques to create new works with contemporary perspectives.

Submission Guidelines:

Theme:
The “Anything But…” theme challenges artists to use materials in unconventional ways including mixed media works in both 2D and 3D formats. The primary rule is that NO CANVASES should be used in the creation of the artwork.

**Canvas is defined as a treated and stretched fabric over a wooden frame meant for painting**This does not include fiber arts, or works that use pigmentation on fabric as a secondary material.

Eligibility:
This call is open to artists of all ages working in various mediums and disciplines. All submissions must align with the theme and guidelines outlined. All submissions must be original works or part of a limited series.

Artwork Limit: Artists may submit up to 3 works for consideration.

Submission Requirements:

Provide a detailed description of the artwork, including materials used and price if for sale (or value if the work is NFS, not for sale).
Upload images of submitted works.

Selection Process:

Entries will be reviewed by a panel of jurors comprising Riverside Arts Center staff, program committee, and a guest juror.
Selections will be based on artistic innovation, creativity, and alignment with the theme of the exhibition.

  • Submit application by the September 22nd deadline. And ensure artwork will be delivered by October 7, 2024.
  • All submissions must adhere to the specified guidelines and thematic focus.

Notification: October 1, 2024
Art Drop off Dates: October 5-7, 2024
Exhibition Dates: October 16 – November 17, 2024
Art Pick up Dates: November 15-18, 2024, times TBD.

This unique exhibition offers artists an opportunity to push boundaries, experiment with new mediums, and showcase their innovative approaches to art-making. By excluding canvas as a medium, we aim to challenge traditional notions and inspire fresh perspectives within the artistic community.
