Visible Mending with Patches
Fibers @ Riverside
THE PURPOSE.
Maybe you love that garment so much you want it to live forever, maybe you are just starting your sustainable fashion journey and want to build up your clothing preservation skills, and maybe you just want a weird patch on your jeans! Any and all ways of keeping the longevity of your clothing going are a great reason to learn how to mend!
WHAT YOU WILL LEARN.
Participants will bring one to two pieces of clothing, or a tote bag in need of mending (see below for some exceptions). Each participant will work with Lindsey to determine which garment or garments to fix for the class. Because each project is specific to the item, some one-on-one time is required at the beginning of the class.
At the beginning of the workshop, Lindsey will briefly talk about why mending our clothing is important and how it can be used for fashion and function. You will then go over a few stitches you can use ( a more visible and a more invisible stitch). Then you will select your fabric patch, press your patch, place it over the spot, and attach it with needles. Finally, you will patiently stitch your patch into place!
WHAT YOU WILL NEED TO ATTEND.
Prerequisite:
For this class, please note that you will need to come with the skill set of knowing how to: thread a needle, tie a knot in the thread, and have basic hand coordination with said needle and thread.
To Bring:
One or two ( depending on patch size) garments or bags to be fixed or patched (Please, no knit garments. These require a different skill set to mend)
Students will also leave with the needle and thread they used for their repair, so they can continue mending and keeping on that sustainability mending train!
